The seventh district is the hot spot for the French aristocracy, who built themselves beautiful golden stone mansions in the late 17th and early 18th century. The French parliament occupies one such mansion, ministries and embassies have taken over many others. The area is prime shopping territory, with antique shops, food and furnishing shops.
Next to the hotel, you will see the Musee d' Orsay, which is a former railroad station (built for the Great Exhibition of 1900) transformed into a beautiful museum of 19th century art, going from the late Romantic, Realist schools and salon painters of the 1840s to the art nouveau and Nabis painters at the beginning of the 20th century.
A delightful museum occupies the house and gardens where the sculptor Rodin, once lived. Rodin left his works to the State and you'll see all the old favourites – The Thinker, The Kiss, The burghers of Calais – as well as preliminary studies and unfinished marbles. The garden is wonderful, especially during spring with flowers, statues and fountains.
Not so far, you will see the French Parliament in the Palais Bourbon, built for the Duchess of Bourbon, the daughter of Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan.
